The district of Märkisch-Oderland is situated in the eastern part of Brandenburg. It borders Berlin in the west, Barnim District in the north, Poland in the east – the Oder River forms the 79-km-long border – and the district of Oder-Spree and the city of Frankfurt an der Oder in the south. The total area is 2,128 sq. km (in terms of size, it is the sixth largest district in Brandenburg), 47,757 ha of which are forests and 5,492 ha are waters. The district has the population of approx. 186 thousand inhabitants. In terms of the number of inhabitants the district of Märkisch-Oderland is the third largest in Brandenburg. The district seat is the town of Seelow inhabited by approx. 5 thousand inhabitants.
